Dr. Pawan Gupta

Dr. Pawan Gupta is a Senior Scientist, Earth Sciences at the Science and Technology Institute (STI),
Universities Space Research Association (USRA), NASA Marshall Space Flight Center. He has
completed his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Sciences from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. His
main research expertise are in the field of aerosols remote sensing from polar and geostationary
satellites, application of satellite observations for air quality monitoring and assessment, air quality
in growing mega cities, spatial and temporal trends in aerosols over urban regions, radiative effects
of aerosols, development of statistical and machine learning models to estimate surface level air
quality, aerosols and clouds data validation and retrieval of cloud products from satellite
measurements. Dr. Gupta is currently a member of NASA’s MODIS and VIIRS science team, citizen
science team, and Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments
(MEaSUREs) team. He also currently participates in developing and conducting remote sensing
technical workshops and capacity building activities for the NASA Applied Sciences Program,
where he teaches the application of satellite imagery to environmental decision-making activities,
with a focus on surface air quality. Dr. Gupta is also lead of the NASA’s ARSET air quality team and
serve as the portfolio manager for SERVIR’s Applied Science Team (AST).
